Selected workshops and classes:
Experience the Ocean as an Event in Consciousness
Kala Gallery, Astoria, Oregon, July 2012
This interactive lecture for children uses the French philosopher Paul Virilio as a guide through a landscape peopled by poets and philosophers considering the nature of being in relation to the natural and constructed environment. Links between modernist and military architectures are considered as roots of the mundane urban architectural landscape and used as a backdrop for philosophical and poetic questioning of the self and the unknown. Children document their experience of the lecture with drawing.
From Form to Experience, From Experience to Form
Dia:Beacon Museum, Beacon, New York, Spring 2012
A series of classes that explored minimalist and earth artists of the Dia collection through exercises that encouraged children to inhabit the role of the artist creating the work, connecting to decision making processes and outcomes as a result of direct encounters with ideas, materials, and life experiences. Movement, painting, sculpting, and drawing, as well as artist's writing and biographical narratives deepened understanding in children's first-hand experience with the artworks in the collection. Students made and painted shapes inspired by Imi Knoebel, created yarn installations inspired by Fred Sandback, did movement exercises inspired by Louise Bourgeois sculptures and much more.
